I learn so much in your analyses of picture book illustrations, Mr. Brian, filtered through the viewpoint of a Caldecott judge. I still think about your eye-opening in-depth analysis of EVERY MONDAY MABEL. Melissa Sweet is one of my very favorite illustrators; thank you for giving us this chance to study some of the reasons why she is a master.
Hey David! Thanks for the kind words. It was fun really getting specific in looking at her art for this book. Do you have a particular Sweet fav? Other than her Caldecott Honor winners, SOME WRITER is probably my favorite (although LITTLE RED WRITING is also up there)
BALLOONS OVER BROADWAY is a particular favorite; her beautiful illustrations expand the text so well. Her images are what I remember first, then they remind me of the specific nonfiction information in the book. I'm also partial to DEAR ACORN, LOVE OAK, perhaps because it was written by a good friend of mine, Joyce Sidman :).
I'm so delighted that this is the first in a series of three books! It is absolutely stunning and your analysis has led me to find even more details to admire. TYVM
